In the late summer of 2001, I was hoping to do some work for Paul Wellstone’s 2002 campaign. I asked the campaign if we could grab some shots at public events to build up our image library of the Senator.

They said yes, and sent us to a number of events over the next year.

We took thousands of pictures, all on 35 mm film. Nearly all the photos here have not been published before, the rest were either used in campaign pieces, were published as part of the memorial observances or can be seen at Wellstone Action. (Be sure to check out Wellstone Action for 10th anniversary memorial activities.)

This gallery covers images we took of Sen. Wellstone from August 2001 at Farmfest through October 20, 2002 at a state capitol labor rally – six days before he died in a plane crash along with his wife Sheila, their daughter Marcia Wellstone Markuson, campaign staffers Tom Lapic, Mary McEvoy, and Will McLaughlin – and the plane’s pilots, Michael Guess and Richard Conry.

You’ll see some noise and dust specks in these images. At the time, we had our photos scanned at the time of processing, and the technology and execution wasn’t always the best.
